What is a Social District?

  • A social district is defined by an outdoor area in which a person may consume alcoholic beverages sold by an approved ABC permittee located within defined social district boundaries and defined days and hours of operation.
  • A social district may include both indoor and outdoor areas of businesses within the social district.
  • A social district may include privately owned property, permittees and non-permittee businesses, multi-tenant establishments, and public streets. (Source)

Social district’s are the fastest growing downtown development program in the state. They are a proven economic driver for increased revenue for downtown businesses as they attract new events and new visitors.

Downtown Goldsboro’s social district is slated to be active by October, 2023. It will operate Monday-Sunday, 10am-10pm. Only on-premise permittees can sell alcohol to the social district.

Social District Requirements

Under North Carolina law, the Social District must meet the following requirements:

  • Be consumed in the social district.
  • Be disposed of before exiting the social district.

Social District Boundaries

Current social district boundaries are Center St from Ash to Spruce, and James to John on: Mulberry, Walnut, Chestnut, and Spruce. Excluding City Hall.
